The art world loves the idea of genius and has its measure of what constitutes genius.
The art market prefers the word prodigy.
It turns the searchlight on the young because it needs one in every generation. The pickings have been thin since Basquiat.
In 1988, I met Geetha Mehra and we co-founded Sakshi. Her art business merged with my curiosity, and together we opened galleries in Bangalore, Bombay, and later in Taipei.
Sakshi Gallery has played an important role in India’s contemporary art scene. Based in Mumbai’s Colaba art district, it has showcased a wide range of Indian and international artists. Over the years, we’ve exhibited leading Indian names like
Jehangir Sabavala, Manjit Bawa, Rekha Rodwittiya, Surendran Nair, and Manjunath Kamath, while also supporting
younger and emerging voices by giving them a strong platform to grow.
We brought works of international artists such as El Anatsui, Gregory Crewdson, and Julian Opie to Indian audiences, building bridges between Indian and global art. Sakshi has participated in international art fairs and held exhibitions in cities around the world, helping to share Indian contemporary art with a wider audience.
